  • Our Process: From Data Copy to Business Confidence

    Reliable backup is much more than a thoughtful, tested and documented process. Our implementations are based on 5 pillars that give you confidence and peace:

    1. Risk and Purpose Analysis (RPO/RTO): We start by understanding your business. Together we define key indicators: RPO (Recovery Point Objective - how can you afford an "old" copy of data, e.g. 1h, 24h?) and RTO (Receivers Time Objective - how fast do you have to get back to work after the crash, e.g. 4h, 48h?).

    2. Design Strategy and Architecture: Based on the established objectives of RPO/RTO, we design architecture in line with best practices such as gold rule 3-2-1 (3 copies, 2 different carriers, 1 off-site copy). We choose the right technology, most often from the Veeam portfolio.

    3. Implementation and Configuration: We install and configure the whole solution. We automate backup tasks, set alerts and a monitoring system that informs us of any success or failure of the task.

    4. Playback and Validation tests ("General test'): This is the most important and most frequently overlooked stage. Backup, which has never been tested, is only hope rather than plan. We regularly run simulated playback tests to give you 100% confidence that on the day of the test everything will work according to the assumptions.

    5. Documentation and Maintenance: We create for you a Continuity Plan (Disaster Recovery Plan) a simple step-by-step instruction on what to do in the event of a breakdown. We also offer a permanent monitoring service and maintenance of your backup system.

Problem

The existing backup was performed on a single NAS in the office, using agents installed on servers. No central console and backup performed on the OS side rather than Hypervizora. The lack of off-site copies meant that a fire or ransomware attack would mean the irretrievable loss of all data, which would be the end of the company's operations because it would also mean the loss of all projects and schemes that are the highest value of the company.

Solution

We implemented a complete solution based on Veeam with Enterprise functionality. The main backups continued to reach the local, fast NAS, but we additionally configured the Backup Copy Job task, which automatically copied the backup to a safe remote location in Azure protected from removal and encryption with the help of the permanent arrays.

Result

The current backup configuration meets the enterprise class standards, so it was possible to obtain a financially advantageous insurance from the insurer. The company now has a comprehensive Disaster Recovery plan to recover data even in the event of total loss of all servers in the company, or loss of data caused by the ransomware attack.

We use Veeam Agent to make copies, is that enough?

Veeam is a fantastic tool, but it's just a tool. Without a properly designed and tested strategy (Where do I keep copies? How often do I do them? Who is responsible for playing?) even the best software can prove ineffective at a crucial moment.

Backup in the Cloud or on your own hardware, what's better?

It depends on your RPO/RTO goals, budget and internet connection. Often the best, safest and most cost-effective solution is a hybrid model: fast, local copies for instant playback and an additional copy in the cloud or second location as a disaster protection.

Should we and if so how often should we test data playback?

We recommend a full test of the Disaster Recovery procedure at least once every six months, and a test of playback of individual files or virtual machines even once a month.
